Describe the contributions of two early colonial American women publishers.
Ida B. Wells was one of the early colonial women publishers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. She frequently wrote about racism and the lynchings of black men accused of raping white women after the end of slavery. Her first pamphlet titled Southern Horrors depicted the unfair and unjust treatment of black people by whites in the south. She not only stood for the equality of blacks, but also women. Wells also criticized the law enforcement and the court systems because they allowed riots to occur in cities such as New Orleans and East St. Louis.
Jane Grey Swisshelm was not only a women’s right activist, but an abolitionist and publisher during the late 1800s. She wrote for several newspapers about the unfair treatment of slaves and even worked as a nurse for injured soldiers during the Civil War.
