3 Functions of Mass Communication

Review three functions of mass communication as discussed in the text. Do you agree? The surveillance function is used for people to keep in touch with what is going on in society. An example would be our need to keep track of the daily weather or results of political events. Entertainment and play is based on the functions related to entertainment and information. Should we keep those two separate or is it important to merge the two? The third function is the cultural continuity which refers to the correlation between popularity and the cultural. In my opinion I think that entertainment and information should be separated because as the book states, news programs today tend to focus on violent and celebrity based news stories just to increase their ratings.
