Recent technologies and the Music Industry

How have recent technologies (iPad, iPhone) affected the music recording and performance industry in ways other than file sharing?

After the power point presentation last week, I learned that the creation of new technologies have negatively and positively affected both the music industries and the artists.  The profits of the music industry have shifted also.  Recording artists and musicians are earning even less money than they previously did.  Since record sales are not as great as they once were, the artists are relying on other avenues to earn big money.  Some have to rely on numerous tour dates and even acting to supplement their income from record sales.  It is also easier for local or undiscovered artists to reach a fan base and sell music without having to be signed to a record company.
